Although it clashes severely with my frugal lifestyle, I am now the proud owner of 4 pets- 2 boxers and 2 cats. They add so much joy and fun (not to mention messes) to my family, that to me, they are 100% worth the extra expense of having 4 more mouths to feed. So… what does a frugal momma feed those 4-legged friends?
It may shock you to hear that I only buy premium pet food for all of them, including senior food for my dear old Brandy. Yes, it is painful to shell out 30 bucks or more for a bag of dog food, but I believe this actually saves us money in the long run. Here’s why:
- Time is money: Cheap pet food is full of fillers, which are not fully digestible, and leads to more poop. The less time I spend cleaning up dog and cat poop, the more time I have to devote to my family.
- Less Laundry: Ever since I made the switch to premium food, my indoor short-haired dogs shed very little fur. This means I am not forced to wash all the sheets as often (yes, they do like to sleep in our bed), and I am also vacuuming less. This saves on water, energy, and detergent.
- Fewer Visits to the Vet: Brandy is an older dog, and used to get arthritis in one of her shoulders every so often. After switching to Nutro Natural Choice Senior (with Glucosamine and Chondroitin for healthy joints), her shoulder stopped flaring up. She is now extremely active and full of energy for a 9 year old boxer.
Other perks: soft and shiny fur! This is not just a sales gimmick, it really does make a difference. Overall, my pets are very healthy and happy, and I believe their food has a whole lot to do with it. Hopefully, they will lead a joyful, healthy life for years to come.
“A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal…” Proverbs 12:7
What do you think? Is the extra cost of premium food a worthwhile investment? What ways do you save on the costs of pet-ownership?

Quality is the best way to go with your pets. In the long run, it really does end up saving you money. And my pets are worth it.
Right now, I have 2 cats, 2 ferrets and a chihuahua. I’ve had many other pets over the years. They are my ‘fur babies’ and I love them almost as much as my children!

Our pets are like our kids, so as we care for our kids, the same must apply to our pets. They deserve high quality, healthy and nutritious food.

Investing in premium pet food is definitely worth it for the health and well-being of your pet. High-quality ingredients can provide better nutrition, support immune function, and promote a shiny coat and healthy digestion. While it may cost more upfront, the long-term benefits of premium pet food, including fewer vet visits and better overall health, make it a smart choice for pet owners. If you want the best for your furry friend, don’t underestimate the value of quality Pet Food.
