PayPal vs. RME: PayPal is Fighting Back

I received an interesting email from PayPal today. I have been a PayPal account holder for years, and very rarely receive emails from them. Curiosity aroused, I opened the email to read about “new” features they are offering.

“Exclusive Savings on Consumer electronics” and “Special offers for PayPal account holders”.

The new PayPal shops feature was highlighted as well. The timing is interesting. Revolution Money Exchange, their new competitor founded by the same man who brought us AOL, has exploded thanks to recent blog publicity. Perhaps PayPal is getting a little nervous?

RME’s marketing strategy is actually quite brilliant. Instead of paying for advertisements, they give all new members 25 bucks, and then we tell all our friends. See how I made 60 bucks here.

Free money aside, RME is appealing to me since there are no fees for most transactions. If you have ever sold anything on Ebay, you know how PayPal fees can eat up your profits.

Sorry, PayPal, even with all your new perks, I am sticking with RME.
