Being the skeptic that I am, I had to see for myself if CFL’s really are worth the time and expense. So, I invested in exactly 4 bulbs last month (with coupons, of course) and began using them in our home. After replacing my old bulbs, I gave the change little thought. Until, that is, I opened my recent electric bill.
Great news! Despite having to turn on the A/C a few times with the warmer weather and all, our bill was actually $13 LOWER than last month. I was amazed! That is 13 more dollars I can put towards our debt reduction plan (snowball). The bulbs have practically paid for themselves in the very first month.
Now, it is possible that this can also be attributed to Daylight Savings, and the fact that since I discovered blogging, I watch WAY less TV than I used to in the evenings. But… I truly believe these lightbulbs made an impact on our bill! Not to mention, we are impacting the environment by reducing our carbon footprint just a bit.
I plan to slowly replace more bulbs in our home and watch the savings grow.
Consider this chart from the energy star website:
You can easily see the drastic difference in watts between the 2 types of bulbs. I hope you will consider trying a few bulbs yourself if you have not already. Since we have no control over the rising cost of gasoline, this is one area where we can make a difference in our monthly budget.

I switched out one bulb this month. Just one. And we saved $10 on our electric bill. I’m totally switching out some more now!

Wow! That is interesting. I’ll have to give them a try. I had just been waiting until I needed new bulbs, but, why wait?
