Many consumers naturally assume that Wal-Mart Supercenter has the lowest prices on groceries. I used to be one of them.
The Roll-Backs they advertise, at first glance, make it seem as though they are constantly lowering prices. Actually, they constantly raise, then lower prices to call it a “roll-back”. I have seen it happen, because I carefully observe every penny.
For example, I sent hubby to Wal-Mart today for a few necessities, including cat food and milk. The cat food we buy now costs $5.94; but just a few months ago, we were paying $4.97 for the same brand.
Milk has fluctuated a bit too, but has hovered at $3.00 a gallon for a while now. I make a habit of always checking each receipt that comes through our door.
I was rather shocked to see that the same milk I paid $3.00 for not long ago, rang up at $3.82 today! This really ruffles my feathers. But, I will continue to shop at Wal-Mart on occasion for all the freebies I can “buy” with coupons.
I pulled out the weekly fliers for each of the 3 grocery stores I have the option of patronizing. What a surprise, ALL 3 of them beat Wal-Mart’s price on milk this week!
Albertson’s has Schepps Milk (the good stuff) on sale this week 2/$6. The Springdale milk at Kroger has been 2/$6 for quite a while, and still is. Lucerne milk at Tom Thumb is 2/$6, as usual. All 3 of the brands I mentioned are hormone-free.
I always keep the weekly fliers in my coupon binder for quick reference throughout the week. Since I subscribe to the newspaper, I receive these fliers in the Wednesday edition. The sales run Wednesday through Tuesday of every week. This will vary by region.
If you are a Wal-Mart fan, I hope you will consider comparing prices. After a while, you will learn to spot a good deal or a price change instantly. Paying attention to prices while shopping is definitely frugal!
Why is Schepps the good stuff?
As opposed to the non-hormone free store brand. It usually costs $4.99 a gallon!
Walgreens and CVS usually have good prices on milk-around 2.89 per gallon this week. I notice both stores advertise their low milk prices in the store windows and electronic signs respectively. It’s almost like a milk war-lol!
My walmart will comp the aldi’s 1.99 on a gallon of 2% milk other wise their store brand is 3.64 a gallon normally.
I’m curious about your coupon binder. Have you written a post about it? I’ve heard several people mention having one so I need to get one started! LOL!
If you’re carrying around your ADs then make wal-mart price match the milk!…. It helps to not have to shop at separate stores with gas being soooo outrageous!
I agree about what you said re: Walmart. I used to think they had the best prices until I just recently started comparison shopping and doing the whole coupon thing.
I have found that i don’t like Walmart like I used to. I now do most of my shopping at Kroger. We don’t have many choices here of where to shop. I hardly ever go to walmart anymore unless, like you said, I can get things almost free. I have found that the cashiers look at me funny when I give them all the coupons. They get sorta annoyed.
I know you’re not a fan of Costco, but milk was the reason we joined. It has consistently been around $2.75. We go through 5 gallons a week, so the savings on milk alone pays for our annual membership!
Oh, how I wish we had Aldi’s in Texas! I hear wonderful stories about it! I also wish for Trader Joes, anyone else?
Sonya-
I have not posted about my coupon binder- yet. It is a constant work in progress, and I am never quite satisfied. I should just get it done- it may not be perfect, but oh well!
Jennifer-
You are right, Costco would be wise for milk. But I would buy so many other cool things at Costco, I just know myself!
Hey Alyssa,
We live in Duncanville, just south of Dallas. We’re getting an Aldi’s in soon!!! Yippee!! My parents have one in Ohio and LOVE shopping there!!
