Update: Life Without Cable

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that my husband did the unthinkable: canceled the CABLE! (gasp, shudder)

I know you are all dying to know how we are surviving without the mind-numbing, time sucking glowing box… er, I mean Television.

Well, after the initial shock of withdrawals, (these were not pretty, people) I am pleased to report that my family is managing quite well without it. I developed a slight twitch for a few days, but that has since passed.

Even as I type, I am listening to the sound of my 7 year old happily playing “school”. This is a kid who has never been one to entertain herself, yet somehow she developed a new skill this week.

Yesterday, my husband did something I never thought humanly possible in his world: finished an entire book. Yes, my husband, the golf playing, UFC watching, non-book reading guy literally devoured a novel in 2 days. Fascinating.

So how am I doing? Well, if this had happened last year, I would be throwing a massive tantrum. I mean, Bree, Gaby, Lynette, and Susan were my FRIENDS. But now, I have a whole new world of REAL friends in the blogosphere.

I must admit, my TV time has been swapped with computer time. So, I am really not much more productive. But I am inspired to go read that book! (The Shack)

We do still have movies to watch for those desperate, please-let-mommy-get-something-done moments. But, life does go on without TV.

Maybe YOU should give it a try!

Way to Go!!! I could totally do without the tv since I’m online with all my friends now too! But, the kiddos enjoy some of the shows so I just can’t do that to them yet….time will tell!

That’s great! We don’t have cable either…but we do have lots of movies to watch when we do watch TV…and my sons like PBS Kids, which is free also. We also subscribed to Netflix which is much cheaper than cable. We do miss it during football season when our team is playing on ESPN!

How’s The Shack? I’ve heard it’s a good book. We don’t have extended cable either. It’s a little hairy right now as it’s summer and it’s been raining alot this past week so the kids are climbing the walls abit. But we’ve gotten used to not having and it’s actually better.

The Shack is AMAZING ! Read it with an open mind and let God talk to you throughout! I am quite proud of your decision to cancel cable!

Kids can live without it, you will see! 🙂

My husband LOVED The Shack, I will definitely read it and report back.

We tried the no cable thing but me my husband are the ones that went nuts. The kids were perfectly happy with PBS and videos. I hate sitcoms, talk shows, and soaps(most shows that are on public tv, really), so we got satellite(only in the living room, the tv in our room only works with DVDs or VHS).

Now we are much happier with The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, National Geographic and the Sci-Fi channel. Definitely the Sci-Fi channel.

That’s AWESOME! I SO need to do that. I am closer today than I was a year ago but am still reluctant. Thanks for sharing your story and that extra bit of encouragement!
I heard The Shack is WONDERFUL! It is definitely on my list of “To Read” books! 🙂
