This recipe is taken from the Eastside Baptist Church cookbook. I have tweaked it a bit, so the recipe you see here will not be exactly like the cookbook reads.
Homemade Wheat Bread
Ingredients:
- 1 cup very warm water (make sure it is not too hot, or it could kill the yeast)
- 1 pkg yeast or 2 1/4 tsp yeast (from a jar)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 cups Whole Wheat flour
- 1 1/2 cups regular flour
Directions:
- Dissolve yeast in warm water.
- Add sugar, oil, and salt. Stir well.
- Add one cup of flour at a time, stirring well between each.
- After mixing in the final cup of flour, begin kneading the dough. I find that it helps to coat my hands with a bit of the oil before kneading.
- Coat a separate bowl with oil.
- Place the kneaded dough in the oiled bowl, rub oil on top of dough (or give it a quick pray with Pam to keep the dough from sticking to towel) and cover with a damp towel.
- Let dough rise until doubled (depending on the temperature of your kitchen, this can be anywhere from 3 to 6 hours).
- Place risen dough in greased (I just spray it with Pam) loaf pan.
- Bake at 350 for 25-35 minutes (depending on your oven).
- After baking, let dough cool in pan for 10 minutes, then remove dough from pan and place on a cooling rack.
