What fuels you? I like to say that coffee fuels me. It isn’t the caffeine, it is simply the taste. The warmth. The way that mug feels in my hands.
For many people, money is fuel. A job. The climb to success. Being seen as important to others.
But, where will all of that get us in the long run? Will that get us anywhere in our eternal life?
The Bible says that fame and fortune are folly, as they will get us nowhere.
2 Timothy 3:2-5, 9 says, “People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5having a form of godliness but denying its power… 9But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.”
In keeping context with the Scriptures, this is referring to godlessness in the last days, but I feel that it speaks to us right now in this time.
What does it seem like everyone is after these days? Fame, fortune, status… If these will get us nowhere, then how do we get somewhere? How do we combat the me-ism that is so rampant in our world today?
We need to change what fuels us.
Unlike those of us who allow money and status to become our fuel, we need to rely on God’s fuel. His Word. His Promises. His Truth.
Yes, we will all fall.
I am guilty of allowing money to become my number 1 (you see, I am in debt, and money would be nice right now).
I am guilty of allowing the allure of status to become my fuel (you see, there is this thing called a blog-o-sphere, and I would really like to be on top of it, and have others see me as important and influential).
I am guilty of looking at others’ lives, and thinking that they have it so much better than I do.
And then, I wake up from my daydreaming and realize that the only fuel, the only status, the only One I need to make me feel treasured and important is Jesus.
I am blessed in my own way, and if I take a minute to assess my life, I realize that I am fortunate… I am influential… and I have everything I need. I am not lacking in those areas, but it can look like I am {to some} because of what the world holds as valuable and successful.
I have to remind myself every single day (and sometimes, multiple times a day), that Jesus is the only fuel I need.
The coffee is just a bonus.
What fuels you?
