Colin at 5 Weeks

Colin at 5 Weeks

It is hard to believe my little guy is on the verge of turning one!  My first boy, the past year with Colin has been an absolute joy. So different from his sisters in many ways, having a boy has challenged me as a mom more than I expected. He is now constantly on the move, exploring, banging, giggling, and even shouting. He adds a whole new element to our home.

Yet some things are the same. The sleepless nights, the laundry, the messes, and of course that sweet baby smell.  Thankfully my little rascal delights in his bath time. Even as a newborn, he loved the water, unlike his older sister.

Despite the differences, Johnson & Johnson products have always been in my home throughout the years. The familiar yellow bottle and light scent is oddly comforting. As a busy mom, I especially love the Head-to-Toe Baby Wash. The frugal in me loves a product that multi-tasks. Especially while bathing a wriggling, slippery newborn! Of course, I also appreciate the fact that there are always coupons for Johnson’s products. 😉

I still use the Head-to-Toe Baby Wash on my growing boy, since it works on babies of all ages. A little goes a long way, and one bottle can last several months, also a frugal plus. Since it is soap-free, dye-free, and hypoallergenic, I never worry about it burning his baby blues.

The thing that surprised me the most when my first grandson was born was the amount of dirty laundry a newborn can accumulate! I had forgotten from when my girls were little. It was like all the laundry is finally finished, turn around … and wow another load of baby laundry. Never ending!

I love Johnson and Johnson products for babies, too. I was surprised at how much physical strength and energy babies took! They sure are worth all of the hard work, though.

It has been a while but was shocked on how much my oldest son wanted to nurse. He could of 24 hours a day if I allowed him. To this day he is 21 and still wants to eat 24 hours a day. His wife is constantly cooking. Now our first grandbaby is due in August and he will get to experience his first baby. I am excited to possibly win so I can add this to the basket of things for the baby. and… how I love that smell.

  5. Katie says

We were peed on puked on and projectile pooped on in the same evening. It was memorable.

  6. says

It occurred to me on the way home (with my first) that the hospital was very irresponsible for letting such incompetent, new parents take an infant home!! 😉

I had a girl first, but my biggest surprise came with my boy. Why didn’t anyone tell me that you have to point IT down, or he will soak his outfit every. time. he. pees!

  8. Heidi says

I just had #5 2 weeks ago and I still find myself surprised with sleepless nights, restless baby, sponge baths, etc. I sometimes feel like a first time mom all over again!!

  9. Christy says

I was surprised to find out how often you have to feed a newborn! I mean I knew it was often but when you add it up you are feeding the baby about 7-8 hours or more a day! Needless to say, I spend a few of those online surfing my favorite sites… like yours 🙂

  10. Christy says

I was surprised that I wasn’t struck with insane cabin fever after 12 weeks of maternity leave. I was perfectly content to be home w my little one and still would be…maybe things will be different and I can stay home with soon to be number two due 8/7/10!

  11. Kimber says

I was amazed at how fast my daughter gained her own personality. Those first few weeks, I loved my baby – but within a few months, I was pretty much crazy about her. I almost forgot she couldn’t talk – I fet like I understood her little personality so well. She’s now almost two, and I’m excited to see my sweet, loving little girl become a big sister in October.

  12. Theresa says

The biggest surprise I had with my newborn was a diaper “explosion”. The mess came up out of the diaper and completely covered the front of the diaper. We had to shower down the diaper before we could get it off of my daughter. My husband and I laughed so hard! It will be something I will never forget and most likely embarrass her when she is older. :0)

  13. Christie says

I don’t have kids, but I have nieces and nephews. I’m still amazed at the sheer amount of body fluids these little guys produce!

  14. Becky says

I was surprised that something that little could turn our entire household upside down and backwards with a simple yelp! We were not prepared for all of the work, and for all of the fun that it really is!! I now have 2, and one is still less than a year. We love it!

  15. Meredith says

I am about to experience the surprises of a newborn in just a few weeks… baby number 1 is due in a month and a half 🙂

  16. says

This time around I was surprised by how small my newborn is compared to almost 2 year old sister, who now seems like a giant!

  17. carriem says

What surprised me the most is that I ferociously loved someone who didn’t seem all that thrilled with me!

  18. Christine Wilson says

The evening my cousin was born, as I held her in my arms for the first time, she opened her eyes and looked at me. I was awestruck. I knew I was in love with her from that moment on.

  19. Leslie says

I was surprised that her eyes would cross. I was scared that they would stay that way. Of course she out grew it.

  20. Laura says

Everything about a newborn suprised me! I had no experience with babies prior to having my own!

  21. says

I was shocked by the amount of gas my 1st little boy had…A nurse told me to start the dryer and get the top of it hot then lay a towel down and put him on his belly…The heat and movement of the dryer would help the gas to pass…It worked almost everytime, along with gas drops!

  22. says

The lack of sleep surprised me. I thought it would be just “a little” lack of sleep. I was back to work after 6 weeks with my first one and I was utterly exhausted. After my second one I became a stay-at-home mom and that helped tremendously. That lack of sleep is a killer!

  23. Mamie Pack says

I was amazed at how different all four of my boys were even from the beginning. There personalities started showing right away.

  24. Shea says

I have a two month old and wow!! Life is great but I never knew that something so small can ” explode” so much. We head to toe wash is wonderful. It smells really good and I love only having to use one wash instead of two. It is amazing and she loves it too because it doesn’t burn her eyes.

  25. Devona says

I was surprised on how much you have to change them!!! They go almost every hour of the day!!! 🙂

  26. says

With our daughter, I was surprised at how quickly andhow early on her little personality developed. She got hiccups alot as a newborn, and she always showed us just how much she disliked them! It was the cutest thing though.

  27. L Cummings says

Biggest surprise – that their little personalities are totally apparent right from birth!

  28. Leigh Anne says

Biggest surprise: the LACK of sleep! You know it’s coming, but nothing can really prepare you for how bad it is! But, it is all worth it!!

  29. Patty Marr says

My biggest surprise with my first baby, was the constant awareness of the baby. I could never “turn off the radar” or not notice the kids activities. (Hard to tune out.) Thankfully, my husband can tune them out, so when they are really screaming, he takes over and I get a break.

    It works for us. . . my 11th is 2yo now. 😉

  30. Rebecca says

Biggest surprise….how different they each are. I guess I was more surprised when I had my second one than the first, I was expecting them to be more alike….none of mine are just alike.

  31. Jeniver says

I was surprised at how small he could be. He wasn’t my smallest, but he really seemed little.

  32. Kim Cobb says

I think the FIRST big surprise about having a newborn is no matter if it’s your 1st or 4th (or more) you so quickly fall head over heals in love. Another big surprise is how much they REALLY, eat sleep and poop. You are told but into you experience it you dont get it. 🙂

  33. Michelle R. says

I was amazed at the powerful love that just filled my heart the first time I held my baby girl!

  34. Nancy Ward says

Biggest surprise: How you fall totally in love with your babies. Not surprisingly the same thing happen with grandbabies.

  35. Brandy in GA says

The biggest and most amazing surprise about having a newborn was actually seeing my wonderful husband turn into a Daddy right before my eyes! <3

  36. Natalie says

I realized with my second that each newborn is different. I didn’t (and still don’t) parent them the same way. Now I have a third on the way and can’t wait to see how different he/she will be.

  37. Sarah B. says

I was surprise how they are fragile, but not as fragile as I thought they were. With my first, I moved so slow with her while dressing and bathing. By the 5th I am careful ofcourse but have figured out they do not break as easy as I thought with my first.
