I really should journal our homeschooling journey. In an attempt to do just that, I will be doing a weekly (or every 2 weeks) wrap-up of our homeschooling fun.

Since my camera is broken, I didn’t take 1st day of school pictures (just call me a bad mom!); besides, only one of the girls bothered to get dressed anyway!

As of today, we have had two full weeks of school, with the first week only doing Reading, Math, Phonics, and Handwriting. I did a lighter load the first week to get the girls back into the groove, but they spent that week itching to do Science and begin Latin.

Reading and Phonics

Both girls are doing very well with their reading curriculum. Reese cracks me up during reading because she is just so darn cute!

Both girls (especially Abby Grace) struggle with remembering “b” and “d”, and often mix them up. I do not remember having issues like this myself (Mom, do you remember?), but I know many children struggle with it.

I am bringing out the Differentiating Between “b” and “d” Color Chart from Fivej’s Homeschool and Study Charts and Worksheets Collection, to help with this.

Math

Both girls are doing well. It is not by any means Abby’s or my favorite subject, but I am enjoying the fact that for now, the math is easy! Reese, on the other hand, loves working with numbers.

Latin

I cannot say enough how much I love our Latin curriculum. The girls are enjoying it immensely. The songs are very catchy, and make learning Latin so much fun.

Among other things, we have learned to say “hello” (salve, pronounced “sal-way”), “goodbye” (vale, pronounced “wah-lay), “student” (discipuli), and “teacher” (magistra). We have also learned that there is no “w” in the Latin alphabet. Even Meleah is dancing around the house singing the songs.

I have made a few changes to the curriculum, and in order to make the Latin “stretch” a bit, we are only doing it two days a week, rather than five.

Science

Our science begins with animals, and that is a favorite subject of all my girls (and their Daddy!).

Handwriting

After a rocky start back into this curriculum, Abby is doing very, very well.

History

I’m not sure how much I love the history curriculum we have. I’m going to give it a few more weeks, though. We are also supplementing with Story of the World cd’s, so I can always switch to that full-time.

Spelling

I decided that Reese should do spelling with Abby Grace, and both are doing well. We have not done a “formal” spelling curriculum before, but so far I like it. I have several other things lined up for them (especially Reese!) to work on their word recognition.

Piano

The girls had their first lesson of the semester (and Reese’s VERY first!) on the 18th, and both are having a blast. Now, if I can just get our piano set back up, they can start practicing!

The Homeschool Room/Office

There are a few finishing touches I need to do before I unveil the homeschool room to you, like painting their desks. Ahem. Hopefully that will be completed before the 2012-2013 school year, but with me, there is no telling.
